Paint spill

My first real full-time job was building and finishing props that adorned Forever 21’s windows in the 2010s. It was the opposite of a glamorous job. (I guess Forever 21 doesn’t always elicit a glamorous image, but let’s admit that it’s glamor adjacent.) We worked in a warehouse with zero climate control and any article of clothing I brought to work was guaranteed to be covered in paint by the end of the day. Needless to say, I’ve seen enough paint pouring out of cans to be mesmerized by the ribbon of color filling into the pool below it.

Sure, making a characteristically very hard paint can out of plush and completely hand embroidering all the text is difficult, but getting the visual texture of paint was the real challenge—and the real fun part for me.

Free roaming weighted beans fill the paint allowing it to hug and spill over surfaces that it’s “poured” onto. This is one technique that I think I’ll be revisiting often.
